One thing we keep hearing from PM candidates right now is that they’re spending all day reacting and all night catching up.

Meetings all morning.
Staffing issues all afternoon.
Then actual project work starts after dinner because the day disappeared.

That’s also why some contractors are suddenly struggling to retain experienced PMs they thought would never leave.

The workload isn’t new.

The constant reaction mode is.

Commercial Construction Growth Is Exposing Operational Weakness

At some construction companies, operations meetings have basically turned into weekly staffing triage.

“Can we move this super without hurting another project?” “Who has capacity left?” “Can this PM absorb one more job for a few months?”

The same people keep getting moved around because there aren’t enough experienced leaders underneath them yet.

One project falls behind, so somebody gets pulled from another site to stabilize it. Then that project starts slipping because the experienced leadership disappeared there, too.

Meanwhile, PMs are spending half their day in meetings and trying to catch up on actual project work at night because everything feels reactive.

And nobody really says the company is underwater directly.

It sounds more like: “We’ll get through this push.” “We just need a couple of hires.” “Once this project gets staffed, we’ll settle down.”

Then another project gets awarded, and the cycle starts again.

That’s the part of infrastructure growth a lot of people aren’t talking about.

The work is there.

The operational depth underneath the work is where some companies are starting to crack.
