Juneteenth: June 19th also known as Freedom Day, commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States.
The holiday marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after the President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Texas was the last state to end slavery.
Juneteenth represents a vital milestone in our ongoing journey towards equality, reminding us of the resilience, strength, and courage of those who fought for freedom.
