On This Day in 1970, We Lost Jimi Hendrix
⠀
Jimi Hendrix (James Marshall Hendrix) (November 27, 1942 – September 18, 1970) arrived in London in 1966 as a largely unknown American guitarist and, within months, was astonishing some of the most celebrated musicians in British rock. With bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell, the Jimi Hendrix Experience created a sound that fused blues, rock, soul, psychedelia, and experimentation into something entirely new.
⠀
In less than three years, the Experience released Are You Experienced, Axis: Bold as Love, and Electric Ladyland, an extraordinary trilogy containing Purple Haze, Foxy Lady, Little Wing, Voodoo Child (Slight Return), and many more. Hendrix later explored a heavier fusion of rock, blues, and funk with Billy Cox and Buddy Miles in Band of Gypsys, while continuing to develop new material at his newly opened Electric Lady Studios in New York.
⠀
Jimi Hendrix died in London on September 18, 1970, aged just 27. His recording career as a major artist had lasted only a few years, yet his approach to tone, feedback, effects, improvisation, and studio recording permanently altered the course of rock music. Fifty-six years after his passing, his guitar still sounds astonishingly modern.
