Dear Husband,
While you’re out there on TDY or deployed to austere locations, she’s holding down the fort at home, carrying the weight of worry and the constant fear that something bad could happen to you. It’s not easy—this life you both chose is full of sacrifices, and the fear she carries is one of them.
Imagine this: a knock at the door sends her heart racing. Her mind jumps to the worst-case scenario, the kind she tries not to dwell on but can’t entirely escape. It’s not just about missing you; it’s about the heavy responsibility of being both strong and vulnerable while holding on to the hope that you’ll come home safe.
She might not always talk about it, but the pressure is real. The constant waiting, the unknown, the endless “what-ifs”—it’s a lot to bear. And while she’s incredibly strong, she’s human too.
So, be gentle with her. When she seems anxious or overwhelmed, it’s not about you—it’s about the weight of loving someone whose life is so often on the line. Listen to her fears without dismissing them. Reassure her in the ways only you can. Remind her she’s not alone in this, that you’re a team, even across oceans.
And when you’re home, take the time to show her how much you appreciate all she’s carried—the fears, the responsibilities, and the countless ways she’s kept everything running.
A little understanding goes a long way.
She loves you fiercely, and that love is the root of it all.

The weight of the world—it’s more than just a feeling. It’s a biological and emotional toll that builds up over time. Allostatic load is what happens when your body stays in fight mode long after the fight is over. Add to that the deep wounds of moral injury, and it’s no wonder many of us feel like we’re sinking under the pressure.
For those that aren't aware, moral injury refers to the profound psychological and emotional distress that arises when someone’s actions—or the actions they witness or are ordered to carry out—violate their deeply held moral or ethical beliefs. It’s not the physical trauma of combat but the internal conflict of knowing you’ve crossed a line you never thought you would, or that you couldn’t prevent something that felt deeply wrong.
For years, you’ve been trained to act, to fix, to protect, and to fight. But what happens when the mission is unclear, the damage is too big to undo, or you’re left powerless to make a difference? It’s demoralizing in ways most people can’t imagine. And yet, you carry it, day in and day out, because that’s what we're expected to do.
But listen, carrying everything alone isn’t strength. Real strength is knowing when to lay it down, to step back, and to recalibrate. That doesn’t make you weak; it makes you human. You’re not a machine—you’re a man with a heart, a mind, and a soul that needs rest and healing just as much as any mission needs a plan.
If this resonates, talk to someone who gets it. A teammate, a mentor, a brother who’s walked the same road or better yet, our licensed coaches. You don’t have to navigate the weight of the world by yourself. Redistribute the load.
