This first week of June is off to a strong start with some wonderful pilot partnerships to celebrate. Those include our two-cohort Earn-A-Bike offerings at Little Creek Nature Area in partnership with the Ferguson-Florissant School District, which is even providing bus transport for many of these fantastic new BWorks students! The outdoor classroom is a fantastic location for delivering our curriculum, and we've loved meeting all these new friends and helpers. This week also marks the return of Learn-To-Ride to the St. Vincent Park community center, whose staff welcomed all of our teachers and students and parents really beautifully Tuesday evening as we launched that four-week series with the support of Great Rivers Greenway. We're also excited to be back at Joe Roberts Youth Club in Madison with 12 great kids diving into Earn-A-Computer there. Big thanks to everyone helping make the start of summer a positive one for our youth! 💙
THE RIDE OF SILENCE WILL NOT BE QUIET — except in St. Louis.
Today marks the 24th anniversary of the Ride of Silence, the one event dedicated to remembering people killed by traffic violence. Yet somehow, in STL advocacy circles, acknowledging fatal crashes has become “controversial.”
Apparently whether your death matters depends on what street it happened on. If it fits the preferred narrative, there will be statements, graphics, hashtags, and funding pitches before sunrise. If not? Silence.
People in this region are killed every single week while biking and walking. Too often, these tragedies are treated less like human loss and more like material for grant applications. Meanwhile, families are left navigating police reports, courtrooms, medical bills, and trauma while organizations debate messaging strategy.
Every victim deserves to be acknowledged. Every family deserves support. Until we stop treating traffic deaths like selective political currency and start treating them like human beings, don’t confuse performative advocacy with progress.
We hope people will use the silence in our region to question the status quo. To ask why there is so little public outrage when a cyclist is intentionally killed in South City, or when someone riding to work is left to die on a North County street.

What a day! 12 amazing BWorks youth, 5 awesome moms, 6 trustworthy river guides, 3 dedicated BWorks crew members ... that's what we call a successful pedal/paddle! We're so proud of this group of Earn-A-Bike alumni and family members and helpers for biking 10 miles up the riverfront today before hopping into canoes for some incredible paddling miles, plus an island lunch stop. Everyone did an amazing job, even amidst some challenging wind on the water. Big thanks to the entire Muddy Adventures team for going above and beyond to introduce this group to the Mississippi River in such a memorable way today and to keep us safe along the way. Truly a memorable day.
