The company, which was first ISO certified in 2003, has been recertified to be compliant with the new requirement for ISO 9001:2015.

In 2019, Microfinish was named a Top Shop for electroplating, naming it one of the top fifty plating shops in the country. This is the fifth consecutive year the company has achieved this honor. Microfinish is the only Missouri company to be named a Top Shop in electroplating. The award was given by Products Finishing Magazine, a publication that has followed the finishing industry since 1936 and surveys hundreds of shops across 45 metrics to find the best finishing shops in Canada, Mexico and the United States.

To help the company stay current with industry standards and changes, Microfinish maintains membership in A-TEAM Program, The National Tool and Machine Association (NTMA) and The National Association for Surface Finishing (NASF). The NASF is a trade group that works to promote the surface finishing industry in North America as well work with plating company with technical, scientific and business developments.

History

The company was founded in 1959, by Stanley Smith, who started the copmany out of his basement. Smith tumbled stamping to remove burrs and to smooth the surface of parts, thereby improving their “microfinish,” which was the inspiration for the name of the company.

In the past 60 years, Microfinish has expanded its capabilities and locations, first moving out of Smith’s basement to a location in Berkeley, Missouri, which has had three expansions. Microfinish has continued to expand to four facilities with over 250,000 square feet of space in the St. Louis area and has over 90 employees.

In 1996, Microfinish opened a 20,000 square foot facility to begin powder coating parts. After three additional expansions, the facility is now 48,000 square feet, serving clients with two conveyor powder coating lines. The powder coating division of Microfinish is in Truesdale (Warrenton), Missouri.

In 2001, Bill & Karen Stock purchased Microfinish, and in 2005 bought C & A Metal Finishing, a mechanical finishing operation. Microfinish returned to its roots as an exceptional metal finishing company with superior quality deburring, cleaning, glass beading and burnishing processes. The metal finishing division is also the corporate office for Microfinish, in Sunset Hills, Missouri.

In 2009, Microfinish IPC, LLC was opened, offering nickel chrome plating as well as e-coating, and providing the capability to zinc plate larger components than can be processed at the Berkeley facility. The nickel/chrome and e-coating division is in St. Louis, MO. In 2015, a second nickel/chrome line was added at this facility, allowing the company to nickel/chrome plate larger parts.

In 2014, Microfinish expanded the services at the Sunset location and began offering electroless nickel, which then was expanded to double production in early 2019.

In 2017, Microfinish purchased ROC Industries to further expand its burnishing capabilities and to begin wheel blasting (shot peening/wheelabrating). The equipment was moved into the Sunset location to expand its capabilities.

Microfinish looks to continue to grow to meet the ever-changing needs of the metal working industry.
