Honoring Juneteenth: A Legacy of Liberation and Leadership On June 19, 1865—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed—enslaved Black Americans in Galveston, Texas finally received word that they were free. Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, marks this delayed but powerful moment of liberation.
