Whether it’s a tiny frog, a curious lemur, a watchful raptor, a fluffy sheep, or a majestic Amur leopard, veterinary care touches every animal at our Zoo. Through routine exams, diagnostics, surgeries, and lifesaving moments, Dr. Rivera, veterinary technician Julia, our vet med interns, and the many doctors and specialists who have supported us all help make that care possible behind the scenes. Tomorrow marks the Staten Island Zoo’s 90th Anniversary! Over the last 90 years, the zoo has found itself in some pretty memorable moments.

Did you know an episode of Sesame Street was filmed right here at the Staten Island Zoo? The visit introduced young viewers to animals and conservation while putting a little piece of Staten Island on television screens across the country.

The zoo also welcomed a Hollywood production when scenes for Mr. Popper’s Penguins, starring Jim Carrey, were filmed on zoo grounds. For a few days, the zoo traded its usual routine for cameras, crews, and movie magic.
