The U.S. doesn’t have just one Independence Day—it has two.

June 19 (a.k.a. Freedom Day or Emancipation Day) is a day of celebration for Black communities.

The Emancipation Proclamation was enacted to abolish slavery, but Texas’s 250,000 enslaved people weren't informed until two and a half years later. On June 19, 1865, the order stating that all enslaved people had been lawfully freed was read in Galveston, TX. This news was met with instant celebration.

Juneteenth is a moment to remember the journey of Black Americans, and it’s one that we must recognize actively.
