As Cody called it, we were on “Jess’s Birthday Brewery Tour” and we loved every second of it. Even though we were supposed to be camping this weekend we figured the next best thing was to go visit 2 breweries that we had wanted to try.
We started in Long Grove at Buffalo Creek Brewing where we both ordered flights. We think this is truly the best idea when going to a new brewery in order to really try a variety of brews. Cody typically is more into the stouts and barrel aged beers versus myself that is really starting to try more IPA’s but my heart always pulls me towards sours and fruit ale’s. The inside of the brewery was like sitting inside a large log cabin furnished with wood benches, high tops and a beer garden outside. But since it was practically roasting the day we went, we stayed inside and took advantage of their table games. We decided to play Jenga and by the end we had the whole brewery watching us in suspense! Overall, the beer was fine. There was not one beer that we would necessarily go back for but the atmosphere and location will definitely draw us back.
We then made our way down to Mount Prospect to try The Red Barn Restaurant and Brewery. By this time we (mostly I) were in need of some food if I planned on trying any more beers. We were expecting more of a brewery feel but it was actually more of a restaurant with an extensive beer list. But the restaurant themselves only had 3 house beers and the rest was a selection of craft beers. We found a seat in the bar and started looking over the beer selection. They didn’t necessarily have flights you could order but they had 4oz pours that you could buy and if you bought more than 4, you got a small discount. Cody and I both selected 4 and also decided on getting a couple of appetizers. We got potato skins with chipotle sour cream and reuben egg rolls. Yes, I said reuben eggrolls. They were absolutely delicious. The chipotle sour cream was a little much for the mediocre potato skins. Cody really enjoyed his beers and I loved the coconut cream ale (Pollyanna Brewing) that I tried.
Trying new brews and new places is our hobby. This day did not disappoint and really was the perfect birthday weekend. Thanks hubs for indulging me and still loving me even if I was “feeling it behind my eyes” by the end of the day.
Park Street Deli Update
Upon further inspection of our fridge we actually had 2 more products!
Macaroni salad - good taste and mouth feel but a little heavy on the mayo for our personal taste.
Medium fresh cut salsa - isn't all that great seems like it was missing something ( I think salt and cilantro) but overall was too tomatoey for salsa, Jess said more of a pico than a salsa
