Japanese Papermaking & Bookbinding Intensive

This immersive workshop explores traditional papermaking and hand-bound book structures through the lens of contemporary studio practice. Students will work directly with fiber, texture, layering, stitching, and handmade paper while creating unique book forms in a small-group learning environment designed for deep focus and individual attention.

This is the kind of workshop that appeals not only to fiber artists, but also printmakers, mixed media artists, journal makers, surface designers, and anyone drawn to the tactile experience of handmade paper and books.

As an added bonus for students traveling in, the timing beautifully aligns with Tropic Bound in nearby Coral Gables (Feb. 4–7 at the University of Miami). Many students may wish to extend their South Florida visit and experience both the international artists’ book fair and this immersive studio workshop in one inspiring trip.

Japanese Paper Place Media Mad - Crazy About Mixed Media Art and Paper Arts Art Now Women Create

There are few workshops that completely change the way you think about materials.

Joomchi: Contemporary Expressions in Korean Paper with Jiyoung Chung is one of them.

We are honored to welcome Jiyoung back to Aya Fiber Studio for this extraordinary 5-day immersive workshop exploring the transformation of traditional Korean mulberry paper (hanji) into richly textured, cloth-like surfaces.

Through layering, moisture, pressure, and hand manipulation, paper becomes sculptural, flexible, stitched, folded, and alive with texture. Students will explore contemporary approaches to joomchi while learning directly from one of the world’s leading artists in the field.
