Stuart 4th of July Fireworks Show Will Go On Despite State of Emergency

Stuart, FL – On Wednesday, June 29th, the City of Stuart City Commission unanimously supported moving forward with the planned 4th of July Fireworks Celebration in downtown Stuart and Flagler Park as part of a discussion on public health and safety considerations stemming from concerns of current algal blooms in the St. Lucie River.

Florida Governor Rick Scott issued a State of Emergency declaration yesterday, following the local state of emergencies; declared by both the City of Stuart and Martin County. In the Governor’s Executive Order (16-155) he stated, “Whereas, the release of these waters and increase in algae blooms that have been dominated by Mycrosystis, an algae that can produce toxins, has unreasonably interfered with the health, safety, and welfare of the State of Florida and its residents.”

The City of Stuart is hopeful that by continuing with the Independence Day celebration, the City may draw greater public attention to the crisis on the St. Lucie River. Stuart officials however, are cautioning residents to avoid contact with the water, particularly with exposure from recreational activities, as Mycrosystis has been confirmed in the algal blooms. The City public safety and event planning team are also meeting before the 4th to discuss further actions that will mitigate risk during the holiday weekend and help to promote awareness of the public health dangers of physical contact with the harmful algae.

The firework display will commence at 9:00 P.M. on Monday, July 4th. Preceding the fireworks, there will be a special Rock’n Riverwalk concert at the Riverwalk Stage from 5:45 P.M. to 8:45 P.M. Anyone attending is encouraged to bring comfortable seating in the park and as there will be no festival or food vendors, the City encourages guests bring snacks as well. The City of Stuart welcomes the public free-of-charge and wishes everyone a happy and safe 4th of July.
