Day 18: The Tense of Peace

We live most of our lives in the wrong grammatical tenses.

When we are anxious, our minds are living entirely in the future tense—rehearsing scenarios that haven't happened, asking “What if?” and trying to solve tomorrow’s problems with today’s limited energy. When we are uniform with regret or nostalgia, we are trapped in the past tense—replaying old conversations, wondering “What if I had?” and wishing we could rewrite pages that have already been printed.

But peace doesn't live in the past, and it doesn't wait for us in the future. Peace is strictly a present tense word.

There is a profound linguistic shift that happens when we force our vocabulary to match our exact surroundings. Instead of letting your mind race to Monday, try naming what is right in front of you right now: The warmth of this coffee. The sound of the rain. The breath in my lungs.

In the scriptures, when God introduces Himself, He doesn't use a past or future title. He says, “I AM.” He meets us in the present.

When we stop pulling our thoughts backward or pushing them forward, we realize that this exact moment—right here, right now—has everything we need.

Take a look around you right now. What is one simple thing in your present tense that you are grateful for today?

Day 15: Redefining the Dictionary

Yesterday, we looked at how Jesus is the ultimate Word made flesh—the perfect translation of a Creator’s love. But when you encounter that living Word, something fascinating happens to your personal vocabulary.

The definitions you used to rely on start to change.
Before, the word "Peace" might have meant the absence of trouble—a quiet room or a stress-free day. But in the vocabulary of faith, peace becomes something completely different: a steady calmness that sits in your chest in the middle of a storm, because you know you aren't navigating it alone.

Before, the word "Failure" might have felt like a permanent verdict, an identity that defined your worth. But under the lens of grace, failure is redefined as a detour, a moment of pruning, or a canvas for redemption.

Even the word "Hope" shifts from a fragile wish ("I hope things get better") into a solid anchor ("I know my future is secure").

When you let the ultimate Author speak into your life, He doesn't just give you new instructions. He literally rewrites your dictionary.

What is one word in your life that God has completely redefined for you?

Day 12: The Names We Keep Alive

Today is Memorial Day—a day traditionally set aside to honor and remember those who gave their lives in service. But if we look at the core of what "remembrance" actually means, it is a quiet, powerful act of preservation through language.

There is an old concept that we all experience two deaths: the first is when our breath leaves us, and the second is the very last time someone speaks our name out loud.

On days like today, language becomes a vessel for honor. When we speak the names of those who are gone, write them down on monuments, or share stories of their courage, we are pulling them out of the past and keeping them present. We are refusing to let their sacrifices fade into the quiet background of history.

Words allow us to carry the weight of gratitude across generations. It is how we ensure that a life cut short still echoes with meaning today.

We speak their names so that the silence doesn't claim them.

Is there a name, a memory, or a story of a loved one you are carrying in your thoughts today?

Day 11: The Lifespan of a Single Compliment

We are all incredibly aware of how deeply a criticism can sting. A sharp word can echo in our minds for days, playing on a loop. But we often underestimate the opposite: the quiet, enduring lifespan of a single word of encouragement.

Think back through your life. Chances are, there is a specific sentence someone said to you years ago that you still remember perfectly.

Maybe a teacher casually remarked, "You're really good at this." Maybe a boss noted, "I trust your judgment." Or maybe a friend simply said, "You have a rare kind of kindness." At the time, the person speaking those words might have forgotten them five minutes later. To them, it was a passing comment. But to you, it was a deposit of confidence. It became a piece of structural support in the architecture of your self-belief.

Language allows us to pass strength to one another. A few syllables cost us absolutely nothing to give, yet they can become a permanent asset in someone else's mind.

We have the power to write the lines that other people use to survive their hardest days.

Who is someone that gave you a "spark" of encouragement years ago, and what did they say?
