There is a lot happening across the Charleston region right now, and the overall picture remains positive.

From port infrastructure and healthcare expansion to new manufacturing operations, hospitality investment and business growth, companies continue to put money, jobs and long term resources into the Lowcountry.

SC Ports recently received design approval for a new roll on, roll off terminal. The North Charleston Terminal expansion is expected to begin operating in 2027, increasing cargo and container capacity and strengthening one of the region’s most important economic engines.

Healthcare is another major area of growth.

Berkeley Hospital completed a three year expansion that doubled its capacity from 50 to 100 beds. The project added 300,000 square feet of new and renovated space, expanded emergency services from 14 to 35 patient care bays and doubled imaging and surgical capacity. It also added a new heart and vascular center and expanded care for women, infants and children.

HCA Healthcare has also broken ground on a $15 million freestanding emergency room in Cane Bay. The 10,000 square foot facility will include 10 exam rooms, imaging, lab services and telemedicine. It will serve fast growing communities including Cane Bay, Nexton, Del Webb and Carnes Crossroads.

In Mount Pleasant, Novant Health opened a new 40,000 square foot Center for Women’s Health at East Cooper Medical Center. The center brings several specialties together in one location, including obstetrics and gynecology, mammography, breast surgery, urogynecology and diagnostic services.

Manufacturing investment continues as well.

Venom EV plans to open its South Carolina operations in a 200,000 square foot Summerville facility. The electric vehicle manufacturer expects to create 60 jobs in manufacturing, engineering, logistics and customer support.

Red Metals is making an even larger investment, committing $70 million to its first production operation in Charleston County. The facility is expected to create at least 45 jobs and will manufacture high conductivity copper rod used in wire, cable and electrical applications.

Weston & Sampson CMR has also opened a new 20,000 square foot construction and operations facility in North Charleston. The property includes office space, warehouse storage and a multi bay repair shop.

Downtown Charleston is seeing new hospitality investment through the transformation of the former Hyatt Place Charleston Historic District into The Lowline Hotel. The 197 room property is accepting reservations beginning in July and includes a restaurant, café and market, event space, pool and fitness center.

Commercial activity is growing beyond downtown too. Michael Mitchell, one of Charleston’s leading luxury interior design firms, has signed a lease for more than 12,000 square feet at South Island Market on Johns Island.

Horse Spot is also expanding its Charleston County operations and adding 11 jobs. The company’s platform supports more than 1,800 horse shows, rodeos and fairs each year. It recently received a $200,000 investment allocation through SC Launch.

Taken together, these projects show continued confidence in the Charleston region.

Growth in port activity, healthcare, manufacturing, commercial development and technology creates more than new buildings and jobs. It also increases the need for roads, utilities, site development, stormwater systems, engineering services and long term infrastructure planning.

Charleston is still growing, and the work required to support that growth is becoming more important every year.

We've been sharing Bible verses that are meaningful to our team members. This one, shared by Tracy Denson, is Romans 7:18.

This verse represents the battle between the spirit and the flesh. We can admit that our will is not in control. We desire to do what is right, but our actions are sometimes opposite of God’s intentions.

In their defense, stormwater designs can be a powerful sleep aid.
