What to Expect the First Time You Use Alcohol Inks
The first time you use alcohol inks, one thing becomes clear very quickly:
They have a mind of their own.
You place a drop of color on the surface and immediately it begins to move. Add another color and they interact. Introduce a little air and suddenly the entire piece changes again.
It's a very different experience from working with acrylics, watercolors, or other traditional art materials.
Alcohol inks are constantly in motion.
That's part of what makes them so exciting to work with. Every piece develops differently. Even when using the exact same colors, surface, and techniques, the results are never identical.
Many people are surprised by how quickly everything happens. Colors spread, blend, separate, and create effects that would be difficult to plan intentionally. Some of the most beautiful details appear when the inks are simply allowed to do what they naturally want to do.
There's also a learning curve in the beginning.
You start to discover how much airflow changes a piece. You see how different colors interact with one another. You learn when to add more ink, when to add alcohol, and when to simply watch what is unfolding on the surface.
And somewhere along the way, you begin to trust the process.
Instead of trying to predict every outcome, you become curious about what might happen next.
That's often the moment people fall in love with alcohol inks.
The experience becomes less about creating a perfect piece and more about exploring color, movement, and possibility.
The first piece may surprise you.
The second one will be different.
And before long, you'll find yourself watching the inks flow across the surface and wondering what they're going to do next.

There’s something really beautiful about creating a series instead of just one piece.
In my new workshop, The Harvest: Alcohol Ink Landscape Series Workshop, we create three alcohol ink landscapes using the same palette — watching the paintings evolve from raw beginnings into rich, full landscapes layered with movement and color.
This class is about more than making pretty paintings.
It’s about understanding how alcohol inks move.
How colors interact.
How landscapes begin to emerge through flow, layering, atmosphere, and intuition.
Inside the workshop, I’ll guide you through:
✨ Working with alcohol inks on Yupo paper
✨ Creating movement and depth
✨ Building landscape forms
✨ Developing confidence with the medium
✨ Creating a connected series of artwork
This workshop is beginner friendly while still offering a beautiful creative experience for artists who already love alcohol inks.
The class is $37 and you can take it at your own pace.
I would love to create with you. (🔗 ⬇️)
