Ready to move beyond basic sailing and start thinking like a true navigator?

Puget Sound Sailing Institute’s ASA 105 Coastal Navigation Hybrid Course combines live online instruction with focused, hands-on classroom training in Tacoma.

You’ll learn how to:

⚓ Read and interpret nautical charts
⚓ Plot positions and dead-reckoning courses
⚓ Calculate tides and currents
⚓ Convert true, magnetic, and compass bearings
⚓ Determine course to steer
⚓ Use coastal navigation publications
⚓ Plan safe and efficient coastal passages

Led by Matthew Blair, owner of Puget Sound Sailing Institute, and past American Sailing Outstand Instructor of the Year, Stephen Lane, this course is ideal for sailors preparing for extended cruising, chartering, or advanced American Sailing certifications.

Course includes:

• Two live Zoom sessions
• Two full-day in-person sessions at Flagship Maritime in Tacoma
• Course textbook
• Training chart
• ASA certification upon successful completion

Plotting tools are not included, so students should bring their own.

Navigation is where seamanship becomes strategy.

PSSI's ASA 101 Basic Keelboat Sailing classes are offered during the week on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, giving you the perfect opportunity to turn your summer into an adventure.

Whether you've never stepped aboard a sailboat or you're ready to build confidence at the helm, ASA 101 is your first step toward becoming a knowledgeable sailor. You'll learn:

✅ Steering and points of sail
✅ Essential knots and safety procedures
✅ Docking and basic maneuvering
✅ Crew communication and teamwork
✅ The fundamentals needed to skipper a sailboat
