Read about the life of Judith Heumann in this American Association of People with Disabilities press release https://www.aapd.com/press-releases/the-world-mourns-the-passing-of-judy-heumann-disability-rights-activist/
Fighting back and social justice was in Judy's DNA. Being denied public education and tagged a "fire hazard," her mom fought back. After Judy got her teaching credential, she was again initially denied a teaching post and then became the first teacher in NY state to use a wheelchair. In a turn of poetic justice, she later was appointed by President Clinton to be Assistant Secretary for the US Department of Education's Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services. Sending love to her family of origin and those of us to be blessed in her family by choice. Lead on in commUNITY and Rest in Power. 💔
