When rural hospitals don't have labor and delivery units, every second counts. FOX 13 Tampa Bay took a closer look at how we're closing that gap.

The Obstetrical Transitions of Care: Interdisciplinary Practices for Rural Providers program, our statewide simulation-based initiative, is bringing critical emergency training directly to hospital staff and first responders in Florida communities without labor and delivery units.

The stakes are high. Up to 80% of maternal deaths are preventable, and as many as half occur after birth. In rural Florida, where transport to specialized care can take over two hours, that time gap is exactly what this program is designed to close. Using high-fidelity simulation manikins that replicate real emergencies like seizures, preeclampsia, and postpartum hemorrhage, our team has already trained providers in Calhoun County, Perry, and Arcadia, with Wauchula next on the schedule. By the end of this initiative, we'll have reached sixteen rural counties, backed by a Florida Department of Health grant that grew out of a successful 2025 pilot in Franklin County.

This program is a partnership led by the Florida Perinatal Quality Collaborative, alongside the Florida Center For Emergency Medical Services and our team at USF Health's Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation. We believe every provider, regardless of zip code, deserves the tools and confidence to respond when it matters most.
