What do we mean when we say Acton Academy is a giant experiment in trusting children?

It looks like this.

As our Spark learners grew more confident in reading, something unexpected happened.

They started reading to each other.

Not because it was on the schedule.
Because they wanted to.

So instead of saying, “Back to the plan,” we asked a simple question:

“Should this become part of our day?”

Their answer was a unanimous yes.

So together, we changed the schedule.

Now every day, learners prepare to read aloud to their friends. They practice courage by sharing their voices. They practice patience by listening through the stumbles. They encourage one another, celebrate growth, and discover that reading isn’t just an individual skill—it’s something that can strengthen a community.

Traditional schools often ask, “How do we get children to fit the schedule?”

At Apollo, we also ask, “What is the learning telling us?”

Sometimes the best parts of a school day aren’t designed by adults.

They’re discovered by children. 💛

✨ Those smiles tell the whole story.

You won’t find them because someone handed out a gold star.
Or because everyone finished the same worksheet at the same time.

You see them because every badge was earned.

No one forced these learners to do the work. They chose to come back, try again, practice, struggle, persist, and ultimately demonstrate true mastery.

Some badges took days.
Some took weeks.
Some took all year.

And that’s exactly why these moments matter.

Because there’s a different kind of pride that comes from knowing, “I did this. I earned this.”

We’ll take that feeling over a hundred gold stars any day. 🦚💛

🎭⚖️ Discovery Studio entered the TVA last week…

Our exploration of sports heroes took a Marvel-sized turn as the studio transformed into Loki’s courtroom from the Season 1 premiere.

There was debating.
Role playing.
Accents that got increasingly questionable. 😅

But underneath all the fun was something deeper: learners practicing persuasion, public speaking, critical thinking, and seeing multiple perspectives—all while fully immersed in the story.

Because sometimes the best learning happens when kids don’t even realize how much they’re learning. ✨
