Despite a 12% year-to-date (YTD) decrease in volume, truckload capacity has been tight for watermelons, strawberries, tomatoes, and corn from Florida's largest produce region, which includes the Lakeland area in Central Florida. This is due to the winding down of the produce season in Florida, prompting carriers to seek opportunities in larger northern markets. The USDA reported a shortage of re**er trucks in Lakeland last week.

Loads from Lakeland to the Northeast, specifically Boston, New York, and Philadelphia, have seen the tightest capacity, with recent loads to Boston paying upwards of $4,000. Northbound loading opportunities will persist for several weeks, particularly for carriers who can capitalize on the 4% decrease in inbound volumes over the last month, which has contributed to reduced available capacity in Lakeland. With Florida's main watermelon season extending through July, Lakeland is a market to monitor closely in the weeks leading up to Independence Day.
