For many of us, it is the start of hurricane season. Others are dealing with tornados, flooding and even fires. Are you ready? Here are some important items to plan for that should be at the top of your list:
#1. Where would you go if you had to evacuate? Have at least 3 places in mind. One nearby, one just outside your community, and a 3rd place further away in case of area wide impact. Make sure everyone knows where to go in case you have to meet up.
#2. What do you need? Start a go bag. Add some basic supplies; flashlight, easy food-peanut butter n crackers, juice boxes are a good start. Add some water bottles and ready to eat soup. Save a little cash. If the power is out, ATMs and credit card machines will not work. Cash is king. Plan to grab medicines, pet and child care needs as you head out.
#3. Prepare your house for leaving. Pick up any loose objects that can be blown away or cause damage. Secure others like propane tanks and grills so they do not disappear.
#4. Fill up your gas tank. Fuel can get scarce. Beat the lines and keep your tank full.
#5. What will you need when you return? Debris will need to be cleared before cleanup can occur. Heavy trash bags, gloves and safety glasses for protection. Bleach cleaner, a bucket and rags stored where they will be kept dry are a good start.
If you have not already started preparing, work on these things first. More tips to come.
