We’re proud to share information about an important tool our officers carry to better serve our community — Carter Kits.

Carter Kits are specially designed bags created to help first responders communicate and connect with children on the autism spectrum during times of crisis. These kits contain sensory-friendly items such as noise-reducing headphones, calming tools, visual cue cards, and other resources that can help reduce stress and overstimulation.

When a child with autism is experiencing a crisis, unfamiliar sights, sounds, and interactions can feel overwhelming. Carter Kits give our officers additional tools to slow things down, communicate more effectively, and create a calmer, safer environment for the child and their family.

Our officers received specialized training on Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and the proper use of Carter Kits which are now in all our patrol cars.

Campers had the opportunity to work on their investigative skills by completing a scavenger hunt around the police department and see what resources are available for officers to collect and inventory evidence. At the end of the day these Jr. Recruits were assigned their first case. Stay tuned!
