Summary
Grief is created by loss- whether the loss of a loved one, a relationship, a dream, a role, health, or a way of life—and it reflects the emotional bond and meaning attached to what was lost. Healing from grief is often supported by allowing yourself to feel and express emotions, seeking connection and support, remembering what was lost while gradually adapting to life without it, and finding meaning or purpose moving forward. There is no universally correct length of time to grieve; grief varies greatly from person to person and may ebb and flow over months or years. Rather than ending completely, grief often changes over time. You may know you are moving through grief when thoughts of the loss no longer dominate your daily life, you can experience joy and engage in relationships and activities again, and memories of what was lost bring more acceptance than overwhelming pain.
