Falling is a big fear of older adults, but it doesn’t have to be.
Getting comfortable on the floor is the first step to being prepared for falls.
If you were to fall:
Mobility exercises can help get you in a better position
Weight shifting exercises can help you get to a nearby object to get up.
Strength and power can help you push off the ground.
When is the last time you got on/off the floor?
Remember- your body is strong, resilient and you can take control of your health at any age. 💪🏼
This is why balance feels impossible with neuropathy.
Peripheral neuropathy doesn’t just affect sensation.
It changes how the entire foot contributes to balance.
When the toes stiffen, curl, or lose contact with the ground, the forefoot stops helping. Balance becomes heel-dominant, which is why walking feels unstable, backward steps feel scary, and many people begin relying on walkers for safety.
You’ll notice some of these clips are barefoot.
That’s intentional and educational.
Foot protection is always important, especially outdoors. But when retraining the foot, working barefoot in a controlled setting can help improve awareness, mobility, and connection between the foot and the nervous system.
The goal isn’t to take support away too soon.
The goal is to retrain forward weight distribution, improve forefoot and toe engagement, and teach the body how to use the entire foot again.
At the end of this video, you’ll see a glimpse of a few exercises I commonly use to help with this.
If you have neuropathy, or you’re caring for someone who does, there are ways to work on balance beyond just accepting decline.
