This Juneteenth, we celebrate the defeat of chattel slavery in America and reflect on the ever-present need to proactively destroy and continually deter all forms of institutional racism, injustice, and exploitation.
Even after the union army and slave-led plantation work stoppages defeated the forces of slavery in our civil war, that evil institution did not quietly fall away. Instead of admitting defeat, the wealthy owners of remote Texas desperately clutched at their system of exploitation, refusing to acknowledge the new reality until June 19th, 1865, when Major General Gordon Granger and 2,000 union soldiers began to enforce emancipation in the former Confederate state.
That conflict between the progressive forces of justice and the reactionary institutions of mass exploitation has echoed through the following decades. From reconstruction to desegregation to the civil rights act to today, history has proven that unchecked injustice is not self-solving. We must uproot and destroy it ourselves.
A better world is within our grasp, and through persistent, direct, and collective action, we will win that world together.
Happy Juneteenth Tempe,
Bobby Nichols
City Councilmember-elect

Happy Pride, Tempe! 🏳️🌈
One month is not nearly enough time to celebrate the incredible LGBTQIA+ residents of Tempe.
Through student activist groups like Free Spirit (now the ASU Rainbow Coalition) and inclusive third spaces like Brick Road Coffee, Tempe's q***r and trans community has spent decades proudly defending LGBTQIA+ rights in Arizona.
It is a great honor to serve our q***r and transgender residents, and I am committed to always advancing the fight for diversity, equity, and inclusion in our city.

No mother should ever be forced to choose between being separated from her child or bringing him with her into a horrific detention center. This story encapsulates the cruelty and pain that families face at the hands of ICE.
Thank you to the Tempe students and parents who are bravely speaking out and to everyone organizing against ICE's brutality. As elected officials, it's up to us to use every tool we can to keep families and communities together.

This Memorial Day, we remember those who have lost their lives while serving the American people. We honor their sacrifice by caring for the loved ones they left behind, providing for their comrades in need, and working to ensure that no future generations are lost in unjust wars.
