While the Fourth of July is full of fun and festivities for many of us, it can be a terrifying experience for pets.
This is one of the most common times of year for pets to panic, escape, and end up lost or in shelters. Loud fireworks, parties, open doors, and busy gatherings can all create the perfect storm for scared animals.
Lucas County Canine Care & Control is helping reduce barriers to getting dogs back home by eliminating impound fees for licensed dogs through July 8.
If your dog is missing, please check with LC4 right away. And if you find a lost dog, report it so they have the best chance of getting back to their family!
Animal shelters across the country see an influx of stray dogs in the days surrounding the Fourth of July holiday each year, often because of pets running away after being startled or scared by fireworks.
The LC4 initiative, dubbed Fido Freedom Days, is an effort to return as many dogs as possible to their homes.
If a reclaimed dog does not have a current dog license, the owner can purchase a license and LC4 will waive the remaining impounding fees. A Lucas County dog license costs $25 and is good through the end of 2026.
If your dog goes missing, please call LC4 at 419-213-2800, visit lucascountydogs.com/lost-found, or visit the shelter at 1301 Monroe St. in Downtown Toledo, Monday-Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
