Today is Flag Day! On May 30, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a presidential proclamation establishing a national Flag Day on June 14, but it was not until 1949 that Congress voted for Flag Day to be a permanent holiday.
Americans celebrate Flag Day by displaying the Red, White and Blue in front of homes and businesses.
What do the colors of the US flag represent? From the American Legion website (www.legion.org) we learn: “According to custom and tradition, white signifies purity and innocence; red, hardiness and valor; and blue signifies vigilance, perseverance, and justice.”
