Running Free
Running Free is a volunteer operated running program for the inmates of the Topeka Correctional Facility
Here’s what’s up! Running Free sets September 14, 2024 as the day to raise funds for Kansas Recovery Network, Inc. This committed non-profit saves lives by digging into high risk areas with NARCAN and other supports. According to the CDC and Prevention, it’s estimated 187 people in the US die every day of opioid overdoses, most often involving illicit and dangerous versions of fentanyl.
‘The true measure of our character is how we treat the poor, the disfavored, the accused, the incarcerated and the condemned’.
Bryan Stevenson
We've been running for food! Our most recent 5K/10K benefit run nets $4600 for Harvesters - The Community Food Network, which translates to 9,000 meals. Runners better their community by caring and sharing for the hungry.
When the Running Free page is hacked but on the same day this note arrives:
‘I was at TCF for 4 years and was part of Running Club. Running Club saved me while I was locked up. I don’t know how I would have survived my incarceration without you guys. I felt like I was a real person and not just an inmate. I was released from prison in April of 2021. I have continued ever since! Before prison I smoked and drank, I do neither now. Running is my escape, my stress reliever. On average, I run 40 miles a week. Thank you for helping to change my life and making me a better person’.
Running for the good.
