Photos from Topeka Genealogical Society's post 09/29/2026

The Topeka Genealogical Society was treated to an extremely interesting program on “Civil War Medicine: Medical Treatments of the Mid-Nineteenth Century” by Jackie Berry from the Wornall-Majors Museum in KC MO. Jackie, a dynamic young speaker with a keen interest and knowledge of history, serves as the community outreach staff member at WM.
We learned about medications and medical procedures used in the 1860s. Jackie relayed surprising facts about the type of damage inflicted by minie balls, survival statistics from various types of wounds, the success rate of limb amputations, and the number of deaths from disease during the war. She also spoke about the types of medical and surgical advances which were made due to the sheer numbers of treatments and procedures necessary in combat and during recovery.
A recording of the program is available for on-demand viewing by TGS members on our website: You must log in to view the recording.
