The lifeguard is screaming. Trenton Democrats are at the beach with their heads in the sand.
Samsung. ExxonMobil. Anheuser-Busch. Mars. All gone — or going.
New Jersey's Fortune 500 company count has fallen from 22 in 2018 to 15 today. The state has the highest corporate tax rate in America at 11.5%, the 2nd worst overall tax climate in the nation, and just passed a record budget with $800 million in new taxes.
Assemblyman Christopher DePhillips has been raising the alarm. The majority keeps building sandcastles.
At what point does someone in Trenton look up?
The company at the center of New Jersey's voter registration scandal is pushing back on Governor Mikie Sherrill's account, and it fundamentally changes the story.
Sherrill blamed Idemia for a "software error" that registered 6,600 non-citizens to vote. But Idemia says that's not what happened.
All 6,600 records correctly showed that the individuals answered "Yes" to wanting to register to vote and "No" to being a U.S. citizen. That information was recorded accurately and was always available to the MVC in the database it used to transmit voter information to the Division of Elections.
If that account is accurate, this wasn't a software glitch that nobody could have caught. The data was there. The state had it. Someone had to decide what to do with it and apparently decided to register these individuals to vote anyway.
There's more. In June 2024, the Division of Elections alerted the MVC that records were missing party affiliation data. The Division of Elections knew something was wrong in June 2024. The public found out yesterday — more than two years later.
These are no longer questions about a vendor's software. These are questions about what New Jersey state officials knew, when they knew it, and why they said nothing.
This is exactly why Assembly Republicans are demanding a Special Legislative Committee with subpoena power. An internal investigation run by the same administration cannot answer these questions.
