On May 29, 2026, HUD released the 2025 Annual Homelessness Assessment Report (AHAR) to Congress, providing the most recent national and state-level data on homelessness in the United States.

Key findings for Alabama include:

✅4,137 total people experiencing homelessness
✅3,347 homeless individuals
✅790 people in families with children
✅157 unaccompanied youth
✅214 veterans experiencing homelessness
✅505 individuals experiencing chronic homelessness

The report indicates that Alabama experienced a 10.1% decrease in homelessness from 2024 and a 24.1% decrease since 2007.

At the same time, the report found that 53.8% of people experiencing homelessness in Alabama were unsheltered, highlighting the continued need for outreach, housing resources, supportive services, and community collaboration.

These findings help inform housing policy, funding priorities, outreach efforts, and community responses to homelessness across Alabama and the nation.

As the Alabama Balance of State Continuum of Care serving 37 counties, we remain committed to coordinating efforts that help individuals and families access safe, stable housing and the services needed to achieve long-term housing success.

We encourage stakeholders, providers, elected officials, and community members to review the report and learn more about homelessness trends in Alabama and across the nation.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has announced that the 2026 Continuum of Care (CoC) NOFO is expected by June 1, 2026, with awards anticipated by December 1, 2026.

Key areas of focus include:
