In Loving Memory of Dr. Ivar Giaever (1929–2025)
It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of Dr. Ivar Giaever. Ivar passed away peacefully on June 20, 2025, at the age of 96, surrounded by his family.
Ivar was not only a Nobel Laureate in Physics—recognized in 1973 for his pioneering work in superconductivity—but also a visionary who brought that same spirit of curiosity and innovation to the life sciences. His work led to the development of Electric Cell-substrate Impedance Sensing (ECIS), a groundbreaking method for studying living cells in real time using electrical currents—without labels or dyes.
In 1991, he co-founded Applied BioPhysics with the mission of sharing ECIS technology with the broader research community. Thanks to his leadership and vision, ECIS has become a trusted tool in labs around the world, helping to advance cancer research, drug development, toxicology, and countless other areas of science.
To those of us who had the privilege of working with him, Ivar was more than a brilliant scientist—he was a kind, witty, and inspiring presence. He challenged us to think differently, to question everything, and to approach science with both rigor and imagination. His mentorship, humor, and boundless energy shaped the culture of our company and left a lasting impact on all of us.
We will miss him deeply, but we carry forward his legacy every day—in our work, our values, and our commitment to supporting the scientists he cared so deeply about.
Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who were touched by his extraordinary life.

🧪 How do you track lung cell injury in real-time—without disturbing your cells? Use 😉
Researchers at Shanghai Jiao Tong University tackled sepsis-induced lung injury🫁 by exploring the protective power of telocyte-derived exosomes🧬 —and uncovered a key role for miRNA-146a-5p in blocking cell death via the caspase-3 pathway.
But here’s the cool part 👉 They used hashtag to monitor endothelial barrier changes live—while the cells stayed incubated. No disruptions. Just precise, continuous data 📊🔥
