Today marks the 30th anniversary of the Nintendo 64, which officially went on sale in Japan three decades ago on June 23, 1996
To celebrate, here is a fascinating fact about its most legendary launch game: In Super Mario 64, the terrifying, razor-toothed Mad Piano in Big Boo's Haunt—which traumatized a generation of 90s kids—was never actually meant to be a piano.
According to the game's director, Shigeru Miyamoto, the development team originally designed that room to feature a mimic enemy disguised as a treasure chest, drawing inspiration from classic fantasy role-playing games. However, because treasure chests didn't quite fit the aesthetic of a haunted mansion's music room, the developers decided at the last minute to swap the chest 3D model out for a piano while keeping the exact same aggressive, snapping bite animations intact.
