My honest take: this is one of the few nostalgia revivals I’m actually rooting for.

Malcolm in the Middle was genuinely weird. Not ‘quirky for a network sitcom’ weird. It was actually bizarre in the way good comedy has to be. Frankie Muniz breaking the fourth wall to explain the logic of a completely insane situation. The parents being equally unhinged. It worked because it had a specific voice.

The question is whether they still have that muscle, or whether 20 years of streaming-era TV has smoothed it out into something safer.

We’ll find out April 10.
