Punches, kicks, takedown maneuvers, restraints, tasers, pepper spray, and gun-like weapons that shoot plastic spheres which burn into orange clouds of chemical dust are among the tactics used by ICE on people in immigration detention.

According to the , “guards forcibly handled detainees who asked staff for things including food and water, medical care and personal belongings.”

The number of people subjected to force rose by 54%, in comparison to the previous year, Joe Biden’s last year in office.

At least 106 people in immigration detention have been injured in use-of-force incidents since 2024, according to the reports, which includes seizures, dislocated shoulders, broken arms, head injuries, and eye injuries.

This reporting is an alarming reminder that immigration detention cannot be reformed. We must continue to work toward a system where people in migration are treated fairly and humanely and can live freely while they pursue their cases.

On Friday, the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in our favor in RAICES et. al. v. Noem, striking down President Trump’s proclamation that attempted to completely shut down asylum at the border.

This is a massive victory, and the Florence Project helped make it happen.

As an organizational plaintiff in this case, we joined RAICES, Las Americas Immigrant Advocacy Center, and 13 individual plaintiffs to challenge the administration’s claim that it could bypass every asylum protection Congress has ever enacted and simply shut down all asylum processing at the border. We were represented in our suit by the ACLU, the National Immigrant Justice Center, the Center for Gender & Refugee Studies, the Texas Civil Rights Project.

While this ruling will not immediately restart asylum processing at the border as the decision will not take effect while the government has time to decide whether to appeal, it clearly states that the unilateral border closure is unlawful.

When you stand with the Florence Project, you are not just funding legal services; you are supporting the legal fights that change the landscape for every person seeking safety in this country. This case will help protect tens of thousands of lives.

We expect the government to seek further review of this decision. But we have been here before, and we will be ready. The law is on our side, and so are you. Thank you for making this possible.
