Urban Infill Project

This project is a showcase piece that maximizes what can be done using the City’s ADU zoning codes. The property now has two additional units added to the back yard - a 1-bedroom Lumen ADU, and a Micro-144 detached sleeping quarter that includes a small bathroom and kitchenette. Three different unit types come together on one midtown lot, articulating compact outdoor courtyard spaces, all fed with rainwater and graywater features from the buildings.

The Roost model is crafted for long, narrow spaces and boasts a modern exterior form with a cute gabled roof and welcoming entry porch. Because of the compact space offered in the studio version of the Roost, the owner opted for a smaller kitchen to successfully maximize the living and sleeping area. Despite the small size, the bathroom maintains accessibility features in the bathroom making it versatile for any future renter.

Contrasting textures and color choices make this unit feel clean and ready to accommodate a modern lifestyle. Exposed wood collar ties, painted a dark color to match the cabinets, accentuate length in a rhythmic pattern.

The windows have been refashioned from the original design to protect privacy of the existing house, and a new rusted metal fence defines a yard for the new unit that is fully private. This unit is rented through Air BnB as a furnished monthly rental and is marketed to UofA students.
