Literary figure, poet, translator, writer, and anthologist Dr. Salma Khadra Jayyusi passed away last Thursday in Amman, Jordan at age 95. She was one of Palestine’s most revered literary figures.
She was the founder of PROTA (Project of Translation from Arabic) and left an unmatched literary legacy. Dr. Jayyusi received many awards, including, most recently, the “Cultural Personality of the Year Award” by the Sheikh Zayed Book Award. She will be remembered as an icon who had dedicated her life to introducing to western audiences works that promote Arabic literature. Whether her own published poetry or her skillfully-translated volumes, the works speak with a profound voice about the suffering in the Arab world and deep concerns about the human condition—especially the bitter Palestinian experience, which was very close to her heart.
Dr. Jayyusi has been often called the “Arab world’s cultural ambassador” and the “doyenne of Arabic literature.”
Some of her books are "My Jerusalem" and "Tales of Juha". May she rest in peace.
