This week during National Skilled Nursing Home Week, we wanted to extend our deepest gratitude to the men and women who work in our state Veteran homes, working each and every day to take care of our Veterans. Today we recognize the sacrifices of military spouses who lost a loved one in the line of duty. This day honors the grieving wives and husbands who deserve our support, understanding and respect.

The Gold Star originated during WWI when service families flew flags with blue stars on them to indicate family members who were serving. If a service member died, the blue star was replaced with gold to know the price that the family had paid in the cause of freedom. Today, a Gold Star lapel buttons are awarded to surviving family members.

To our Gold Star Spouses, thank you for your sacrifices.
