Last week my family and I went to San Diego, and we were at the beach when I saw these two families with a bunch of kids just having an absolute blast.

The kids were so completely free and playful, and I loved it. It was the kind of moment I love to photograph. This happens to me all the time… I’ll see a family out in the world and I just ache to photograph them. Like, I wish you knew how beautiful this is right now.

This time, I actually had my camera with me.

So I decided to take a risk. I walked up to the mom and asked if I could photograph them. I showed her my Instagram, my ID, pointed to my own daughter… basically everything I could think of to make it clear I’m not a creep and I’m truly just a family photographer who loves this kind of real, joyful chaos.

And she graciously said yes.

I photographed them right there, exactly as they were. No posing. No “everyone look at me.” Just kids being kids at the beach.

It was a big moment for me — because it reminded me that it’s okay to talk to strangers sometimes… and really good things can come from it.

I’m grateful for this new Fearless Family Photographers award!

Last year in Portugal, the uncle to these two little girls was heading to the airport after a visit. One last squeeze at the door. The oldest clinging to mom’s leg like “wait, not yet.” The youngest already moving forward to meet the Uber with the family outside.

This is why I love documentary family photography. Goodbyes are never just one moment. They ripple through everyone, all at once.

Two photographs. One story collection. Three recognitions.

The first image—recognized by Fearless Family Photography—was made in Portugal in 2025: parents and grandparents around the table playing Yahtzee, one child bored at the table, another barely visible on the couch in the distance. Nothing arranged. Everything honest.

The second photograph, an Honorable Mention from Inspiration Family Photographers, shows a girl looking through a peephole. To me, it feels like a quiet metaphor—curiosity, anticipation, and the act of looking ahead.

The third recognition was for a story collection following three cousins on vacation together across Portugal and Germany in the summer of 2024—shared time, shared history, fleeting days that matter more than they seem.

Grateful to begin 2026 with these being my first awards of the year.

This is the work I care about.
Not perfection. Not performance.
Just attention to real life.
