Why do hot water heaters go bad? For the vast majority, the tank rusts out causing a water leak. This W/H Anode rod on the right is 5 years old. I try to change this on a regular basis. What is the purpose of the Anode? The metal that it's made of is softer and more susceptible to corrosion. Checking and draining sediment out of the W/H annually can help prolong it's life. My W/H is currently 22 years old, with simple maintenance I do hope to get a few more years out of it.
