Latina/e/o/x Heritage Month, celebrates @mellow_man_ace 🇨🇺appeared on Soul Train on october 6th 1990. Born Ulpiano Sergio Reyes, is a Cuban-American rapper widely regarded as the “Godfather of Latin Rap”, for being the first Latino MC to achieve gold sales, pioneering the use of Spanglish in hip-hop with his hit "Mentirosa" (1989), and helping to pave the way for Latino artists in the genre.

He was a founding member of the hip-hop group Cypress Hill and introduced a blend of Latin and hip-hop culture that significantly influenced the Latin hip-hop scene.  He was born in Cuba and moved to Los Angeles with his family at the age of four.

He achieved his biggest hit with the 1989 single “Mentirosa,” a Spanglish track sampling Carlos Santana’s “Evil Ways”. The success of his hit single was a breakthrough for Latino artists in hip-hop. 

His legacy is defined by his bilingual “Spanglish” style and the success of his hit single “Mentirosa,” which was a breakthrough for Latino artists in hip-hop. 

B-boy beginnings: Ace first became involved in hip-hop as a b-boy, going by the name “Frosty”.
