“Elvis had such a keen ear. He could listen to a song once or twice, and he knew it. But he had his own ideas. He was picking these songs, all these big monster hits, and he was always right. So after awhile what could we tell him? We couldn’t tell him what to record; we’d have been crazy. He had the reins. Whatever he wanted to record, that was it.
He picked “Don’t Be Cruel, “Hound Dog,” —a whole string of big hits.
Hill and Range Music Publishers in New York would send demos for him, and if he didn’t like ‘em he’d throw ‘em out, like all the artists do.
But Elvis would hear about eight bars [of each song] and say, “Okay, hold that one to the side. Put that over here. I’m not sure about that one; put that over there. We’ll do this first, second, third.” If he had singles to do, he’d simply say, “This is the single.” He just kind of had this knack for picking the hits, and everything was real simple. Elvis didn’t want anything complicated, and that’s why he sold records, I think. You could understand what he was doing. And there’s nothing ever vulgar or suggestive in any of the records.”
