Dr. Hamel speaks about myopia (nearsightedness). Myopia is a refractive condition where your eyeball is typically longer than average. This causes the light entering your eye to focus in front of your retina, resulting in blurry vision at far distances. Refractive correction in the form of glasses, contacts or surgery redirects the light to focus exactly on the retina, resulting in clear vision. Myopia progression is when it continually gets worse, rapidly. Myopia progression is a hot topic in the eye care world because patients with high myopia can have ocular health problems such as retinal degeneration (lattice, holes, tears, staphyloma). If myopia progression can be slowed down, it could help a lot of people! Communities that spend more time outdoors in open space as childhood and adolescence tend to have lower rates of myopia. Communities that spend more time on tablets and computers tend to have more myopia.
