Thinking about going solar? Here's something a lot of homeowners don't realize until it's too late: your electrical panel might not be ready for it. If your panel is near capacity, older than 25 years, or has no open breaker slots, it can quietly limit your savings or even block your permit entirely.
The good news is that a load calculation from a licensed electrician tells you exactly where you stand before panels go on the roof. And upgrading now (most 100-amp to 200-amp upgrades run $1,800 to $4,500) also makes room for future EV chargers, a heat pump, or battery storage. Still plugging in your EV and hoping for the best? There is a smarter way.
Smart EV chargers let you schedule charging during off-peak hours, cutting electricity costs by 30% or more on California TOU rate plans. Add the 80-20 rule (charge to 80%, never below 20%) and you are protecting your battery and your wallet at the same time.
Copperfield Electric put together a full guide covering everything Orange County EV owners need to know: scheduling, load management, departure timers, SCE rebates, and how proper installation makes every smart feature actually work.

A warehouse fire in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, just showed what can go wrong when rooftop solar meets a serious blaze, and every commercial property owner should pay attention.
On June 17, 2026, a fire broke out on the solar array of a Lineage cold storage facility. It spread across nearly 500,000 square feet of roof, reached an ammonia refrigeration line, and triggered several small explosions. Firefighters were pushed off the roof and had to call in helicopters, a tactic normally used for wildfires. The fire smoldered for days and prompted both city and state emergency declarations.
No injuries occurred, but the scale of this event is a clear warning.
Here's what every commercial property owner with rooftop solar needs to know:
- Solar panels stay energized in daylight even when the main breaker is off, producing 600 to 1,000 volts of direct current. That makes a roof fire far more dangerous for crews.
- Rapid shutdown systems are required by modern codes. They exist to drop panel voltage quickly so firefighters can work safely. Confirm yours is labeled and functioning.
- Panels cover the roof surface that crews use for ventilation, which limits their options and slows response.
- Regular inspection of wiring and connections catches arcing and heat buildup before they become a fire source. The same Boyle Heights roof had a smaller solar fire in 2024.
- Roof pathways need to stay clear so crews have access when it counts.
If your building carries rooftop solar, this is the right moment to schedule an electrical safety check.
