OCFA Firefighters from Engine 21 had a great time visiting the students at Red Hill Montessori School in Tustin this week! Thank you to the teachers for welcoming us and giving us the opportunity to share important fire safety lessons.
One of the most valuable parts of a school visit is helping children become familiar with what firefighters look and sound like in full protective gear. During a fire response, our helmets, masks, air tanks, and protective clothing can seem intimidating to children. Watching a firefighter put their gear on can help them understand that the person behind the gear is friendly and there to help.
Parents can reinforce this lesson at home by reminding children that if they ever see or hear a firefighter in full gear during an emergency, they should never hide. Instead, they should call out and let the firefighter know where they are.
By replacing fear with familiarity, we can help children stay safe during emergencies. Thank you for doing your part!
It doesn’t take a wall of flames to ignite a home. Wind-driven embers can travel miles ahead of a wildfire and become trapped on, under, and around combustible decks and balconies, increasing the risk of fire spreading into your home. A little maintenance now can make a big difference when wildfire threatens.
Here are a few ways to reduce the risk:
✅ Keep decks and balconies free of leaves, pine needles, and other plant debris.
✅ Never store combustible materials beneath your deck.
✅ Keep firewood at least 30 feet from your home.
✅ Choose fire-resistant or non-combustible outdoor furniture when possible.
✅ Seal gaps where the deck meets your home and consider enclosing the underside with non-combustible materials.
✅ Maintain defensible space by keeping nearby vegetation properly trimmed and well maintained.
If you’re planning to build or replace a deck or balcony, consider using non-combustible materials such as metal, masonry, or lightweight concrete for added wildfire resilience.

OCFA was honored to join Yorba Linda City Council Members, community leaders, and fellow first responders at the Liberty Tree dedication ceremony at Veterans Park on Tuesday.
As we approach the Fourth of July and the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, we recognize the spirit of service and self-sacrifice that has shaped our nation since its founding. The Liberty Tree stands as a symbol of the courage, unity, and commitment of those who chose to place the needs of others above their own comfort and safety. At OCFA, we aim to embody these values by always answering the call to protect lives and property with exceptional emergency and support services.
We are grateful to the City of Yorba Linda for preserving our nation’s history and for reminding us that the values of service, sacrifice, and community remain as vital today as they were 250 years ago.

Every second counts during a fire. Create and practice a home escape plan so you and your family can get out quickly if the smoke alarm sounds.
Your escape plan should include:
🚪 Two ways out of every room
📍 An outside meeting place in front of and a safe distance from your home
Be sure to:
✅ Discuss the plan with everyone in your household so each person knows what to do
✅ Practice the plan at least twice a year
✅ Teach children to escape on their own
Take time today to create and practice your home escape plan so your family is ready when it matters most.
Thank you for following along throughout National Safety Month. Stay safe and have a great summer!
A disaster can happen with little warning. Having a family disaster plan helps ensure everyone knows what to do, where to go, and how to reconnect if you’re separated.
Your household disaster plan should include:
📍 Two meeting places—one near your home and one outside your neighborhood
📞 An out-of-area emergency contact everyone can call or text
🚪 Evacuation routes and multiple ways out of your home
🏫 Plans for children, including school emergency procedures
🐶 Arrangements for pets and anyone with access or functional needs
📄 A list of important phone numbers and emergency information
Take time to discuss your plan with everyone in your household and practice it regularly. A plan only works if everyone knows it.
OCFA’s “Family Disaster Plan” template can be downloaded at ocfa.org/documents.

Our Battalion 2 Firefighter of the Year, Jysiah Davis, was honored this morning at Yorba Linda Rotary Club’s annual Sunrise Fire & Police Recognition Breakfast. Congratulations again to Jysiah and thank you to the Yorba Linda Rotary Club for continuing this longstanding tradition of recognizing those who serve.
When disaster strikes, access to stores, power, and basic services may be limited. A disaster supply kit helps ensure your family has the essentials needed to stay safe and self-sufficient for at least three days.
Your kit should include:
💧 Water (1 gallon per person, per day)
🥫 Non-perishable food and a manual can opener
🔦 Flashlights and extra batteries
📻 A battery-powered radio
🩹 First aid supplies and medications
🧤 Heavy gloves and basic tools
🐶 Food, water, and supplies for pets
📄 Copies of important documents and cash
Remember to consider the unique needs of everyone in your household, including children, older adults, and pets. Keep kits at home, in your vehicle, and at work, and make sure they are portable in case evacuation becomes necessary.
Preparedness starts before an emergency. Build or buy your kit today so you’re ready when it matters most.
