One of the most common misconceptions about trees is that branches rise as the tree grows taller. The assumption usually goes something like this: that swing set hanging from a branch at 8 feet will eventually end up at 12 feet as the tree gets bigger. It doesn't work that way.

Branches grow outward from their fixed point on the trunk. New height in a tree comes from terminal buds at the top of the canopy pushing upward. The branch that was 8 feet off the ground when you hung that swing is still at 8 feet ten years later, even if the tree is now significantly taller overall. What does change is the branch's diameter and weight, which is part of why older lower branches on large trees can become structural concerns over time.
