Proclaiming the gospel to the most unserved regions of Africa by combating blindness through surgery

She Blinked and Started to Cry

For three years, Alice sold fish in the market without being able to see.

She worked by touch and memory. She knew the weight of each fish in her hands. She recognized customers by their voices. It was exhausting, but she refused to stop working.

A young woman who lived with her became her daily guide—walking her to the market, helping her eat, dress, and move safely. When that young woman passed away suddenly, Alice lost not only her sight, but the person who had become her eyes.

When our team came to Afagnan, Alice received cataract surgery.

The next morning, when the bandage was removed, she blinked… and started to cry.

She looked around slowly, recognizing faces. After three years, she could see clearly again.

Now she is preparing to return to the market on her own.

Thank you for helping make that possible.

ISSAKA’S STORY | Northern Togo, Africa

Two years ago, Issaka lost her sight—first one eye, then the other. “I stopped going to the fields because I couldn’t see anything,” she said. “I felt alone, always in my room, hoping God would find me a solution.”

Blindness took a heavy toll on her family. “I became a burden,” she shared. “Some of my children grew tired of helping me, and the atmosphere at home was heavy.”

Then one day, her son heard a radio announcement: a team of doctors from Sight.org was coming to Bafilo.

“The team treated me with such respect and kindness,” Issaka said. “I wasn’t afraid anymore. The day my bandage came off, I saw the colors of nature again—it was pure joy.”

Now Issaka can walk on her own, and peace has returned to her home. “My children are back to work. Joy has returned. May God bless everyone who made this possible.”
