Direct sales of agricultural products help farmers and ranchers diversify their operations, generate additional income and connect consumers with local food.

According to the 2022 U.S. Census of Agriculture, 3,215 Missouri farms sold products directly to consumers, the most among neighboring states. Direct-to-consumer sales were reported in 106 of Missouri's 114 counties.

Missouri is also home to more than 150 farmers markets, and about one-third of Missourians purchase local foods through channels such as farmers markets, farm stands and community supported agriculture programs.

While direct marketing accounts for a small share of total agricultural sales, tracking these trends helps communities identify opportunities to support producers, expand market access and strengthen local food systems.
