If you are ever in a situation where you have to perform CPR and are unsure how fast to do chest compressions, listen to the song “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees. This song roughly has 100 beats per minute, which is around the correct number of compressions needed.
The idea of mouth-to-mouth resuscitation was seen as a way to save a person that had been under water and was not breathing. In 1740, the Paris Academy of Sciences offered its official recommendation for mouth-to-mouth resuscitation in these situations.
“… if the respiration were suspended by the over-action of medicine on the brain, and the heart were not entirely paralysed, artificial respiration would, I believe, restore the patient.” John Snow, MD, 1857
