EMS Week is a national observance dedicated to recognizing the work and impact of Emergency Medical Services professionals.

EMS Week was first authorized in 1974 by Gerald Ford to honor the critical role EMS personnel play in public health and safety. It is typically celebrated each year during the third week of May.

The purpose of EMS Week is to:

* Recognize and appreciate EMS professionals for the lifesaving care they provide
* Educate the public about EMS and how emergency medical systems function
* Promote injury prevention, emergency preparedness, and community health awareness
* Highlight the teamwork between EMS agencies, hospitals, dispatch, fire departments, air medical services, and educators
* Encourage recruitment, retention, and continued professional development within EMS
